How many of you are spending most of your work day behind a desk, eyes glued to the computer screen, smartphone, tablet or maybe split between the three? Stressed about deadlines and customer satisfaction.
As a result your neck is slowly stiffening up, there is a dull pain somewhere between your shoulder blades, your lower back is aching…and the list can go on and on.
Finally your work day is over and you are on your way home driving in heavy traffic once again glued to your seat, tired and uncomfortable – your body aching and stiff. Or maybe you are squashed like a sardine on the train, bus or tram. Yes, you might be lucky to get a seat but I can definitely say that most of you will immediately hunch down to your mobile or laptop while seated.
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
Back and neck pain and overall body stiffness, tension headaches and repetitive strain injuries are the most common conditions that can be caused by a “day in the office”. 8 out of 10 people will experience some type of distractive pains and tension patterns that are work related in their life.
So, is it possible to work in the office and be pain free with improved posture, balance and movement?
The answer is YES and with that said, it’s time to think about how to prevent neck and back pain.
Humans are a creature of habit. As has been said by American fiction writer Edgar Rice Burroughs: “We are, all of us, creatures of habit, and when the seeming necessity for schooling ourselves in new ways ceases to exist, we fall naturally and easily into the manner and customs which long usage has implanted ineradicably within us.”
Most of the things that we do every day are a result of habit. A habit is something that can be performed automatically without thinking about it too much. Saying that, little are we aware how those habits can cause some type of damage to our health and body. By spending the whole day in the office it is possible that some of your daily habits may cause back or neck pain now or in the future. We are mostly unaware of our habits, but they can definitely influence our body and health wellbeing.
When our environment changes then our body adapts to new conditions and new habits can be formed. Sitting, standing and walking for prolonged periods of time, performing everyday tasks, dealing with stress – all those actions are influenced by our habits and play the part in developing the new habits.
Hours spent scrolling on smartphones, tablets and laptops are putting so much strain on our body that new types of muscular-skeletal conditions are now emerging such as:
- “Mouse arm”
- “Texting thumb”
- “Text neck”
I know all this because I was one of those people who was living like this for many years. I was silently suffering and thinking that nothing can be done.
My transformation began when I discovered the Alexander Technique. I came across it almost by accident as here in Australia (unlike in the US and UK), it is largely unheard of other than in performing arts. Alexander Technique provided me with the skill to consciously (as contrary to habitually) use my body as I am moving, resting, reading, walking, working on the computer, browsing the smartphone and doing other everyday tasks . It gives me the power and control, so I am no longer the prisoner of my old habits – I have a choice. The feeling of freedom in my body is overwhelming. It brings a smile to my face. I can do more, quicker, easier and I am no longer in pain.
