Ergonomics & Wellness in Massage and Beauty industry.

Cultivating posture and movement habits that co-operate with biomechanical design, reduce musculoskeletal disorders.

  • Does it matter if beauty or massage therapist is work with raised shoulders?
  • Does it matter how beauty or massage therapist is bending over their clients?
  • Does it matter how beauty or massage therapist holding the tools?

Yes, yes, and yes!

It all matters!!!

The most common work posture in the beauty industry is one with the neck bent and the torso collapsed. Equally harmful is bending over with raised shoulders – habitual work posture in both beauty and massage industry.

It is possible to twist and bend your neck and torso because the intervertebral discs allow compression and distortion.

However, just because you can doesn’t mean you should ….

It is harmful because the muscles, which raise the shoulder, are movement muscles, not designed for prolonged contraction.

Prolonged and repeated distortion of the spinal discs results in tissue damage and chronic pain.

This is one of the main reasons for the high incidence of occupational chronic pain in the beauty industry.

Take care of yourself.

  • Change the way you reach for instruments, phone, towel.
  • Use the joints for the movement – avoid contorting your spine.
  • Use gravity – it is our best friend.
